Open Question: Why do Southerners think Northerners hate them?

I live in Massachusetts. I have friends from all over the country as my husband was in the Marines. We were based in North Carolina. While I was down there I heard the work Yankee a lot and constantly heard people refer to Northerners. While living in Mass. I never hear anyone segregate the two. In my opinion after living in both places is that people from the South automatically assume that the people from the North hate them/judge them. Does anyone else think this?
